Donating Securities

Donating securities is a tax-efficient way to make a charitable donation. When donating publicly listed securities to a Canadian registered charity:

  • you receive a tax receipt

  • you are not taxed on any capital gains earned on the investment

You can donate securities such as:

  • stocks, stock options

  • bonds

  • mutual funds

The process to donate securities is a little different than a normal donation. We will work with you to make sure that it is a smooth process and tailored to your individual needs and the requirements of your brokerage institution. Securities are transferred electronically from your brokerage account to the Kindred Foundation brokerage account.

When you donate securities, you will be provided a tax receipt for the fair market value of the stocks on the day that the securities are received by Kindred Foundation (calculated based on the closing price for the securities on the day of transfer). The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) does not apply capital gains tax on appreciated publicly traded securities when they are donated to a Canadian registered charity.

Please contact us and we will personally help you with donating securities to Kindred Foundation.
