Founded in 2016 in memory of Phoebe Rose Doull-Hoffman, Phoebe’s family and the Phoebe Rose Rocks Foundation aim to foster positive change within the childhood cancer community. Their mission is to support travel for families seeking treatment and to raise childhood cancer research funds with a focus on hard-to-treat and cure cancers.
After seven years of operation, Phoebe Rose Rocks Foundation integrated with Kindred Foundation. They still have the same presence but with donations directed through Kindred Foundation. Members of Phoebe Rose Rocks and Kindred form a Committee to make funding decisions.
CHEO enrolls children, adolescents and young adult patients with hard-to-cure cancers in PROFYLE to gain as much information as possible from molecular profiling to inform treatment and care decisions. Dr. Berman's Lab applies a pre-clinical modelling platform to validate therapeutic targets for PROFYLE patients identified by molecular profiling.
In 2025, the Phoebe Rose Rocks Committee provided CHEO with $130,000 in funding:
$25,000 CAD for 3 years from 2025-2027 for pre-clinical modelling for the Berman Lab.
$55,000 CAD for 1 year for molecular profiling costs for CHEO’s involvement in PROFYLE for 2025.
In total, Phoebe Rose Rocks has provided over $500,000 to support PROFYLE at CHEO.
In 2024, a new grant was funded by the Phoebe Rose Rocks Committee and Mélia’s Memory Foundation. This is a $100,000 grant provided over two years.
Dr. Jongbok Lee | University of Calgary
Developing novel off-the-shelf CAR-T cell for relapse/refractory infant AML Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in infants is highly aggressive, with limited treatment options especially when the cancer relapses or doesn’t respond to chemotherapy. Dr. Lee and his team are exploring the use of donor-derived T cells, specifically CD4-CAR-DNTs, which show strong anti-cancer activity in laboratory models and could offer a promising treatment for infant AML. This project aims to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of CD4-CAR-DNTs for treating CD4+ infant AML, potentially offering a new therapy for patients with recurrent or resistant disease.
The DECRYPT Research Grant of $600,000 CAD over 4 years is funded by Phoebe Rose Rocks, Kindred Foundation, Cancer Research Society (CRS), Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, The Miracle Marnie Foundation, Childhood Cancer Canada, and Tali’s Fund. The DECRYPT Research Grant awardee is Dr. Annie Huang from the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and her cross-Canada team for the project, “DECRYPT -Babybrains Trial for Children Under 6 Years Old with High-Risk Embryonal Brain Tumours.”
In 2024, Dr. Huang and her team focused on developing the research protocol and all the necessary materials (e.g., consent forms). The next step is for everything to be reviewed by a research ethics board, a critical step that must happen before a clinical trial can open. 2025 should be very exciting, seeing the opening of this clinical trial!
The Family Support Package Program, started by Phoebe Rose Rocks, provides $350 worth of gift cards to help families with the cost of gas, food, and other expenses when their child is in cancer treatment. In 2024, 104 Family Support Packages were provided to childhood cancer families across Canada. Packages can now be found at 6 hospitals across Canada!
The U-Link Patient and Family Fund provides families who have to travel to access a clinical trial with up to $2,000 CAD per year. In 2024, 11 families received financial support through the U-Link Patient and Family Fund.
In 2024, the Phoebe Rose Rocks Committee planned a cocktail event that took place at Nate's Deli in Ottawa. It was an unforgettable evening filled with incredible people, live music, beautiful “Golden” clothes from Little Press Co, and way too much fun.
Together, we raised over $20,000 for the Phoebe Rose Rocks Committee and the Family Support Package program.
Phoebe Rose was born on August 8th, 2010. A beautiful, healthy and strong baby girl. Just over two months later, she was diagnosed with mixed lineage (MLL+) infantile leukemia.
She lived life to the fullest and although she had cancer; she was not a sick girl. She was feisty, determined and brave. To know Phoebe was to love her.
Phoebe taught us to love greatly, to laugh even when it’s hard, to always find time to play, to live without fear, and to always look for the joy. Her journey with cancer taught us to never give up and opened our eyes to the need for more research for better treatment options and cures.
The Phoebe Rose Rocks Foundation was founded in honour and memory of Phoebe Rose. Phoebe would often say that living with cancer as a child was “not okay” – this is our way of helping to #MakeItOk.
